Symbolic Migration Program

John Rex Monarchs Reach Miguel Hidalgo School in Zirahuato Village

This fall, our 4th-grade classes embarked on an exciting journey of discovery and connection through the Symbolic Migration Program, a unique initiative uniting students and scientists across North America to track the monarch butterfly’s extraordinary migration to Mexico.

From September to November, our students explored the wonders of this incredible phenomenon, learning how these delicate creatures travel hundreds of miles to reach their winter sanctuaries in central Mexico. Along the way, they discovered the vital role monarch butterflies play in connecting people across international borders.

A special highlight of the program was creating “Symbolic Ambassador Monarchs”—paper butterflies crafted by our students as a gesture of friendship and a commitment to conservation. These symbolic butterflies were sent to schools near the monarchs’ overwintering grounds in Mexico, representing a shared responsibility to protect the monarch migration while building bonds between students in both countries.

We’re thrilled to share that on December 2, 2024, our Symbolic Ambassador Monarchs arrived at their destination: the Miguel Hidalgo School in Zirahuato Village, a community nestled near the butterfly reserve. As part of this exchange, students at Miguel Hidalgo School are now learning about John Rex Charter School and the Oklahoma City area, continuing this inspiring cycle of cross-cultural exchange and learning.

This program beautifully illustrates the power of global connections and the importance of safeguarding our natural world. Through their participation, our students not only gained a deeper appreciation for the monarchs’ incredible journey but also became part of a larger movement to foster global awareness and conservation.

2020-2021 P-EBT Announcement

Dear John Rex Families, We have recently been in touch with the State Department of Education regarding the P-EBT cards for the 2020-2021 school year. If your student qualified for these benefits LAST SCHOOL YEAR, and you have not received your card, you have until NOV. 30 to fill out a review form here: https://sde.ok.gov/pebt Students who qualified met the following requirements: - Qualified for Free or Reduced Lunches AND - Were a virtual student for any part of the year. John Rex Stands Up Against Bullying

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and a new outdoor project at John Rex Charter School (JRCS) is teaching students about the importance of kindness. The project was led by Troy Hays, a local Life Scout and son of a John Rex Elementary School teacher. Hays constructed four cedar benches, or “Buddy Benches,” for students to use during recess.
